How Do Cavities Form?
Tooth decay (cavities) are caused by acidic bacteria that erode healthy enamel. When you eat food, any food remaining on the teeth are also eaten by bacteria that produce acid as a byproduct, eroding your teeth.
That’s why brushing and flossing (to get between the teeth) is so important! While preventable with good oral hygiene, some cavities form in hard-to-reach spaces such as between teeth and within the deep grooves on their chewing surfaces.
Through routine exams and low-dose digital X-rays, early decay can be pinpointed while it’s still small and easier to treat. In some cases, early decay is reversible and your Edmonton dentist can educate you on how to best prevent small cavities from becoming big cavities. Early intervention allows us to treat the cavity before it spreads deeper into the tooth.

How Do I Know I Need A Filling?
Early stages of tooth demineralization are reversible with good oral hygiene and fluoride therapy. But once decay has eroded through the full thickness of your enamel, it’s impossible for your tooth to repair itself. At that point the cavity will only continue to grow larger. We need to clean the decay out and place a filling in the space before the cavity grows too large - or worse, reaches the inner nerve tissues of your tooth.
During your exam, we’ll take digital images that allow us to peer inside and around teeth to screen for decay in spaces that aren’t visible to the naked eye.
